Chestnut Forks Tennis and Fitness Club ( www.chestnutforks.com ) was originally launched in 1975 by Chip Maloney. Today, son Derek runs operations, deploys new initiatives, and constructs strategic planning with both staff and client input.
Energy, sustainability and environmental footprints have always been addressed as a top priority by management.
Many years ago, an open loop geothermal system (see photo) was installed to heat and cool the indoor tennis courts (4) which have a huge volume of air.
Note: Department of Energy (DOE) measurement standards should be cost of energy per cubic foot, not square foot, to be relevant for todays’ buildings.

Upgrades are under consideration such as retrofitting a closed loop geothermal system.
Older buildings and HVAC equipment deteriorate as time passes. Energy costs rise along with kWh / BTU usage without preventative measures.
In 2012, Chestnut Forks employed the services of a local energy conservation / sustainability subject matter expert, Michael Rainger.
Energy usage was benchmarked using free technology available at www.energized-fauquier.com via the Register process on the Home page. Past usage (18 months) was analyzed in excrutiating detail. Findings were reviewed with staff. Daily meter readings began. Changes were implemented.
This past winter (2012) - $3497 was saved in less than 90 days (8%).
Work continues and new issues are being addressed such as the (high) cost of power consumption operating the outdoor summer pool.
On May 15, 2013, Chestnut Forks Tennis and Fitness Club was recognized for their Energy Conservation / Sustainable Efforts at Poplar Springs – The Inn Spa, in Casanova Virginia, along with 8 other local entities. See Chip, Joan, Brandy and Derek in the photo gallery.
